Design services provided to Metallurgical Corporation of China Limited (MCC) for Central Expressway – Section 1, Sri Lanka

AVEK was entrusted to provide structural designs for a road length of 20km including viaducts, bridges and box culverts. The project while challenging due to being located within a major floodplain in the country was completed with utmost efficiency due to our experience in handling all kinds of complicated highway structures including interchanges. Several Remarkable structural optimisations and related innovations were some of our greatest achievements in this project. Usual pile caps were removed as the 1500mm pier column converts to a 1800mm pile itself. The lateral capacity was ensured with a 1000 mm x 1500 mm tie beam connecting top levels of piles in each pier. Continuous girders provided another layer of economy and additional durability, which was further enhanced as usual dowels connecting superstructure and the capping beam were removed, and bearing pads were accurately modelled in the numerical model and each bearing pad was designed to withstand relevant forces and deformations instead. Metallurgical Corporation of China Limited (MCC) was the main contractor of the project. Structural designs were started in year 2019. The construction work of this project was initially planned to be completed in year 2024.
